Peter Agre won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2003 for his discovery of aquaporins, the water-channel proteins that move water molecules through the cell membrane. This important breakthrough eventually led to the discovery of an entirely new family of proteins in animals plans and bacteria. Agre is also active in politics and almost ran for a Senate seat in 2008.
